Baltasar Engonga jailed for 8 years after being found guilty in corruption case

In addition to the prison sentence, the public figure was fined KSh 28 million for his crimes

Baltasar Ebang Engonga, a senior government official from Equatorial Guinea, has been sentenced to eight years in prison after being convicted of embezzlement.

Why was Baltasar Engonga sentenced to jail?
The court's decision, handed down on Wednesday, August 27, marked the end of an investigation into his involvement in diverting state funds meant for professional travel expenses.

Engonga, who is also known by the nickname Bello, has been at the centre of a high-profile scandal that has rocked the country and its government.

Baltasar Engonga's sex tapes

Engonga went viral in November 2024 after a series of sex tapes featuring him and several married women were leaked online.

Some of these disturbing videos were reportedly filmed in his office at the Ministry of Finance.

The release of the tapes sparked a social media frenzy, leading to a wave of online parodies and memes.

Many users took to the internet to create songs, dances, and even a funny spoof virility drug called “Balthazariem”, a nod to Engonga's controversial public image.

Despite the public attention, Engonga's legal troubles did not end with the viral videos.

His embezzlement charges came from allegations that he, alongside five other senior government officials, had been misappropriating large sums of money that were supposed to cover professional travel expenses.

The total amount involved in the scheme is said to be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, a huge sum for the small, oil-rich Central African country.

According to Hilario Mitogo, the Supreme Court press director of Equatorial Guinea, the Bioko provincial tribunal convicted Engonga for embezzling state funds.

The court ruling on his case resulted in a prison sentence of eight years and an additional fine amounting to KSh 28 million ($220,000).

Engonga, who previously held the position of head of the National Financial Investigation Agency, was married at the time the scandal broke.

His involvement with multiple married women, compounded by his role in the country's government, added to the shock and anger among both the public and government officials.

The sex tapes and the embezzlement case have damaged his reputation.
